Optical Illusion Dressing
Using Optical Illusions in Your Dressing to Achieve a Balanced Figure
We
perceive things around us with our eyes but, sometimes, our brains can trick
our eyes into seeing something different from what is actually there. Seeing,
actually involves, not just the eyes, but the brain, the object you’re viewing
and the environment in which it is placed.
Your
brain gives a colour to the object you’re viewing based on the lights reflected
by other objects surrounding it. In other words, the colour of the environment
surrounding an object can affect the colour you see the object as.
Your
eyes can trick you.
That
is what optical illusion dressing is all about. Tricking others’ eyes to see
you in a more flattering way. For example, using mesh panels, contrasting colours,
side cutouts and contrasting stripes in your dressing.
The
aim of using the technique of optical illusions in your dressing is to provide
you with the appearance of a balanced, figure-eight shape.
The
way you do this is: you apply this technique on areas on your body you wish to
slim or de-emphasize. For example, your shoulders, collarbones, sides, waist
and thighs.
An
example of this slimming strategy is a white dress with black fabric on the
sides (dark colours slim the area to which they’re applied).
Other
Slimming Strategies
§ Using angled or diagonal stripes
§ Using vertical, closely-spaced lines
§ Wearing clothes in shades of one colour
(monochromatic colour scheme)
§ Using stiff or heavy fabrics. Shiny fabrics make
your figure appear larger.
§ Wearing dark fabrics
Aside
from colours, you can also use your clothing style, clothing silhouette (cut
and shape) plus the fabric of the cloth, to give you the shape you desire.
Slimming
Tip:
The
most slimming way to tuck in a blouse is to do a little twist with the fabric
at the center of your back before tucking it into your skirt or trouser.
Before
you can apply the optical illusion dressing technique, however, you need to
know your current body shape and the body shape you intend to achieve.
Apart
from knowing your body shape, you also need to know:
§ The right length of tops, shirts and jackets for
your shape. Knowing where your tops should end; before, at, or below your
waistline is crucial to your looking thinner and taller.
§ Where the waistline of the dress that’s perfect for
you should be placed. Hint: it should be as low as possible on your body.
